Yes, the D'Emilio was fabulous. I quite enjoyed his presentation, and I hope somehow he can publish that in Perspectives or some other avenue.

I too am in San Diego, staying at the Marriott to avoid the Hyatt (though my view is almost as good as Claude's). This morning at the Women Historian's Breakfast, presided over by the amazing Peg Strobel, John D'Emilio gave an excellent talk on the same sex marriage campaign -- suggesting that it was a mistake, and also a disaster, as it had not been planned strategically but individualistically. Instead, he suggested, given the declining rate of marriage, it would have been better if the effort had been to decouple the benefits of marriage from marriage. (This is a vast oversimplification of his argument, of course.)

I echo Claude's sense of the smaller size, and I also think the book exhibit is smaller. The SHEAR reception last night (which I was encouraged to crash by friends) had great food and free drinks.

This afternoon as I walked over to the Marriott from the Hyatt, there was a noisy demonstration by the workers reminding everyone of their grievances.
