D00ds, you will abide!

D00dly science d00d

I have to ease on down the road to pick up a passel of exams and final papers this morning, and to meet with a former student returning from his first year in a Pee Aitch Dee program in triumph, so while I’m out please enjoy the wit and timeless wisdom of my new BFF, Comrade PhysioProf, in this post at Dr. Isis’ blog, On Being a Domestic and Laboratory Goddess called, “Comrade PhysioProf’s Handy-Dandy Guide for D00dly Commenters” (slightly edited):

You’re a d00dly d00d. Everyone around you since birth has been praising you for sharing your thoughts, opining on topics far and wide, and generally taking f[rack]ing action!

You have just visited a feminist blog, have read a post and/or some other comments, and your d00dly opining d00d brain lobe is pulsating like a motherf[***]er with all sorts of extremely important d00dly things to share with the laydeez. Will you get your sorry d00d a[$$] handed to you on a f[***]ing platter? Or will you be a tolerated visitor? Comrade PhysioProf is here to share his tips with you on avoiding d00d a[$$] platter handitude!

(1) If you are leaving the first comment to a post, you are almost certainly f[***]ing up.

(2) If you are using the words “men”, “boys”, “fathers”, or “sons”, you are almost certainly f[***]ing up.

(3) If you are using the words “should” or “useful”, you are almost certainly f[***]ing up.

Over on the feminist science blogs, I think they deal with more d00dly nonsense than on the feminist humanities blogs, but I’m sure you regular readers can think of a few past d00dly d00ds in the comments here.  If you just can’t get enough of Comrade PhysioProf’s precious bons mots, you can consult this post and thread at Thus Spake Zuska, or check out his own personal eponymous blog, Drugmonkey.  In the thread at Zuska, don’t miss the part where “Hope” says, “[t]hat sounds dangerously close to saying that men on feminist blogs should be seen but not heard. Increasing numbers of young women today refuse to call themselves feminists, and this kind of nonsense is a big reason why.”  Right on schedule!

We might add another rule for commenting on feminist blogs:  if you blame feminism and/or  feminists for a pressing social issue or concern, you are undoubtedly f[***]king up!

It kills me when people conclude that feminist blogs “silence” men when they assert the expectation that commenters will play by the rules for the space. Especially since all of the “feminist” blogs that I read regularly have regular male commenters who leave judicious, interesting, and well-reasoned comments in which they engage respectfully with the conversations at hand. Are those commenters not “real” men? And if we say that they’re not, what kind of messed up assumptions about gender and subjectivity does *that* indicate? Male does not equal d00d.

The idea that by expecting a certain level of engagement and respect – with the follow-up that if a person can’t or won’t do that then they shouldn’t comment – that feminists “exclude” men (or “young women” who like the menz) is a total red herring.

    Are these commenters not men?

    They are Devo!

Hehe! That made my day :)

Thanks for the linkaggio, Historiann! DEVO is my favorite band ever! I saw them years ago on their New Traditionalists tour at the Beacon Theater in NYC, and it was the best concert I ever saw.

BTW, the DrugMonkey blog is really owned by DrugMonkey himself. I post there on science-type stuff, but my own blog is:

The Spud Boys from Akron were definitely the coolest thing to come out of Ohio in between the Ohio Players and Kim and Kelley Deal.
