Eartha Kitt died at age 81 today.

Farewell, Catwoman.  You’re the only villain I ever rooted for.

UPDATE, 12/16/08:  NPR’s Morning Edition offered a nice obituary today, including exerpts from an interview about a year ago with the incomparable Kitt.

The _Times_ also has a very interesting and admiring obit. today. I couldn’t extract the “villain” part from the content, though–but I do remember the big fluffup with the Johnson administration and with American culture critics in general over her criticism of Vietnam policy. (She was stepping out of line and out of place along numerous dimensions, according to the views of the day).

Catwoman was Batman’s foe! (Otherwise, I rooted for Batman.)

Taking on the Johnson administration in its own backyard was heroic, not villainous.

I missed the entire Batman franchise. Including the films, the trailers, the ad posters at the Metro-North train stations, the spin-off toys, the entire thing. Didn’t he have a car that left its own strategic oil slick? Or maybe that was Bond…?! Pretty clueless.
