It's astonishing, isn't it? I really enjoyed Jon Wiener's Historians in Trouble when it came out a few years ago. He traces several "scandals" in the historical profession, and posits that if you're a right-winger (Steven Thernstrom, Besty Fox-Genovese) you'll be OK, but if you piss off a wealthy and powerful right-wing interest group (Michael Bellesiles), you'll hang. I'd put Goodwin in the category of inoffensive yarn-spinner along with Joseph Ellis: they tell us pleasing, unchallenging tales about Great Men, and so are effectively conservative whatever their actual political beliefs might be, so they do just fine.

This is why I turned this broadcast off after five minutes, as soon as Dowd reared her hateful head.

As to Goodwin -- why is she still considered the fave public intellectual when she's openly admitted to plagiarizing? How about giving the rest of us a shot?
